Miss Proper and the Telephone

Miss Proper has something to say about manners and the telephone. Actually, Miss Proper has quite a bit to say about it, for she has been most appalled and disgusted by her peers manners upon the ‘phone.
Miss Proper would like to point out that the instrument know as a “telephone” was originally used as a instrument of communication, not as a anti-boredom device or listening ear into another persons family. To use it as such is to abuse a helpful instrument, and Miss Proper thinks it is time to stop all abuse, telephones included. At this time, she would like to showcase some of the letters she has received…

Dear Miss Proper,
Whatever is one to do when a friend starts eating while on the phone with you?! This happened to me just the other day ( it was not meal time) and I was so unsure what to do! Is it now considered proper to eat while on the phone? I offered to get off, and she said “No, I was fine”. Still, it was uncomfortable!

Miss Proper replies…

Indeed it is not mannerly to eat when one is on the phone, no matter the time or the circumstance. The only polite thing Miss Proper knows to do is to say quietly “ Dear, I do hate to go, but there seems to be a breadstick on the line. Perhaps it will be off later.”

Dear Miss Proper,
I am so sick of rudeness on the telephone! Just the other day, while having ( what I thought) was a deep conversation with a friend, I realized she was busy doing something on the internet, and while she assured me she was listening, it was obvious she was not. What in the world do YOU do when that happens?!

Miss Proper replies…

Miss Proper usually remarks in a acid and chilly tone that “she did so hate when people multi-tasked on the phone, it nearly convinces one that they are not listening”, and, if that does not work, she simply asks the other person to call her back later when they have time to talk… and insists on hanging up until a “better time”. It eventually does the trick.

Dear Miss Proper,

Ouch! My ear is still ringing! Whatever do you do when someone starts yelling (across the field, wherever) while on the phone with you? It hurts!

Miss Proper replies…
Well dear, this is the only time Miss Proper knows of that one can scream in effected horror on the telephone, “Oh, my ear!”. It does work quite nicely.

At this time, Miss Proper would like to encourage you all to use correct manners, and hopes that you have a lovely day!
